When it comes to packaging, the material you choose affects everything – from how your product looks on the shelf to how well it travels.
One popular option you’ve probably come across is OPP packaging. But what is it, and is it right for your business?
OPP stands for Oriented Polypropylene, a kind of plastic film made by stretching polypropylene (a common plastic) in both directions. This stretching lines up the plastic molecules, giving the film extra strength, clarity and durability.
It’s sometimes called BOPP (Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene) – technically more accurate, but most people just use both OPP and BOPP.
Pros | Cons |
Cheaper than PET or multilayer films | Limited recycling infrastructure in the UK |
Great for your branding and shelf impact | Can warp or shrink at high temperatures |
Available in lots of different sizes and thicknesses | Not great for long shelf-life without extra layers |
Easy to print, cut and laminate | Made from petroleum-based plastic |
Available with food-grade certifications |
OPP is lightweight, strong and looks great, which makes it ideal for all sorts of packaging – especially when product visibility and presentation matter. Here’s what makes it stand out:
OPP film gives you excellent transparency, making it ideal for retail packaging.
The surface of OPP brings a sleek, high-end look that gives you great shelf presence.
Naturally resistant to humidity, helping you maintain the condition of your packaged contents — especially dry or sensitive goods.
Strong enough to withstand handling, transport and stacking without easily ripping or puncturing.
Reduces overall packaging weight, helping you lower your shipping costs and material usage.
You can print in high quality directly on to the film – perfect for your branding, product details or compliance labels.
Often used in food packaging where you need direct contact (so long as it meets food-grade standards.)
Countless things across food and retail. Its clear, polished look makes it a go-to for any product where first impressions count. It’s everywhere, especially in:
Here’s a quick breakdown:
Term | Stands for | What it means | Common use |
OPP | Oriented Polypropylene | General term for stretched polypropylene film | Wrappers, retail packaging |
BOPP | Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene | Stretched both length- and width-wise for strength | Stronger, more durable version of OPP |
CPP | Cast Polypropylene | Not stretched. Softer and more flexible | Heat-sealable inner layers |
If strength, clarity and a smooth finish are priorities for you, you’ll want BOPP (or OPP). If you’re after a soft sealing layer, CPP could be the way to go.
